Audi is refining its naming system to provide a unified and transparent way for customers worldwide to identify its vehicles. The updated alphanumeric format will indicate a model’s size and positioning without differentiating between electric and combustion engines.
“This change reflects extensive discussions and aligns with feedback from customers and global dealers,” explains Marco Schubert, Member of the Board of Management for Sales and Marketing at AUDI AG. “Our new system gives customers an intuitive understanding of where each model fits in our lineup.”
Here’s how it works:
Model names will combine letters and numbers to indicate size and position.
Letters A and Q distinguish between low-floor (e.g., sedans, coupes) and high-floor (e.g., SUVs) vehicles.
Numbers (1 through 8) classify size, regardless of powertrain type. The previous use of even and odd numbers to differentiate drivetrains is no longer relevant.
Electric and combustion-engine models will now share the same name structure, with additional identifiers like body style (e.g., Avant, Sedan, Sportback) and powertrain codes (e.g., e-tron for electric, TFSI or TDI for combustion engines) ensuring clarity.
The first model to adopt this change will be the combustion-powered Audi A6, a flagship of Audi’s full-size segment, debuting globally on March 4. It will be followed by models like the all-electric Audi A6 Avant e-tron, leaving no room for confusion thanks to the updated naming approach.
This streamlined system enables all customers—from car enthusiasts to first-time buyers—to easily understand Audi’s portfolio, reinforcing clarity and consistency across markets. Already-released models will retain their current names.
